MS Office coming to Chrome OS courtesy Google
MS Office is the most popular productivity suite used by millions of
men and women across the country. Users love its versatile features and the
ability it provides to create so much on your device. Google, the search engine
giant has entered into a partnership with a software company called Parallels
to bring not just MS Office but many other Windows apps to its Chromebooks. This
is indeed great news for students who use light and fast Chromebooks for their
education as they will benefit greatly with Windows applications. MS Office support to these notebooks will give a big boost to their stature and help
them in capturing new markets.
However, there is a small catch in this news item. MS Office and other
Windows applications can be run on Chrome OS only by enterprise users. Google is not very ecstatic about the
development it seems as it disclosed the news in a blog post, adding that more
info will be shared with the customers in the coming months. John Solomon, who
is the Vice President of Chrome Operating System has welcome this partnership
by saying that availability of Windows native applications will add new
functionalities for the owners of Chromebooks.
Those who do not know anything about Parallels, it is the same company
that helped in introducing native Windows apps to devices running on Mac
OS. The company has expertise in
virtualization and creates virtual environment in which native applications
work seamlessly. It is still not clear whether this feature would be available
to individual owners of Chromebooks at a later point of time or not.
Google has always desired MS Office support for its Chromebooks.
Way back in 2018, when Google had given the name Pixelbook to its light and
fast notebook running on Chrome OS, it was planning on a system of dual boot
that allowed its notebooks to load Windows native applications.
The latest offering from Google in association with Parallels, is
expected to be available to enterprise users of Chromebooks any time later this
year. When contacted, representatives of Parallels confirmed the development
and said that it might be a reality by October 2020.
This integration of native Windows apps across platforms with the help
of virtualization will be very beneficial for companies where employees make
use of different operating systems in their devices. Whether your employees are
using Windows based devices or Macs, they can now enjoy working on MS Office
and other Windows applications seamlessly. Now the same will be the case for
workers using Chromebooks.
Online MS Office support for Chromebooks will boost the productivity of not
just students but also the executives and employees working in small and medium
sized businesses. In tough times when corona virus has forced millions of
people to work from home, this new capability will come as a boon for the
owners of notebooks from Google. Remote working is the new reality of modern
times and availability of the most popular productivity app like MS Office on
Chromebooks is going to be a revolutionary step.
