Apple to drop iOS 13 support in iPhone SE, iPhone 6 and the sky is the limit from there
Apple introduced its much awaited iOS 13 during Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose on Monday. The latest update to the operating system will introduce many changes to the UI and it will also boost the performance of all Apple devices. There is some bad news for all those who own older iPhones like iPhone 5S and iPhone 6. While all owners of higher devices will enjoy iPhone support through iOS 13, older iPhone owners will not get this new user experience.
Another major change that has
been announced at WWDC yesterday is that iPads will get a separate operating
system different from iOS. All tablets in the stable of Apple will now run on
iPadOS.
Whenever there is any major
update in the operating system of Apple, there is usually concern shown by
older device owners. Will the new update be compatible with their old devices?
As far as iOS 13 is concerned, it provides support to most of the smartphones
in the family. Many old iPhone owners will be able to update their operating
system to enjoy the new iOS 13.
However, unlike iOS 12 that
was launched last year, iOS 13 is only meant to be used in higher iPhones. In a
press release after the event, Apple announced that will only be extended to
iPhone 6S and all phones after it. If your smartphone is higher than iPhone 6S,
you are lucky as it will get iOS 13 support.
One smartphone that has been
surprisingly omitted from the list of supported phones is the iPhone 6S that
was launched in 2014. If this is the
case with 5 year old smartphone iPhone 6, it is only natural for older
smartphones like iPhone 5S to miss the train. Many fans are disappointed with
this announcement as iOS 12 extended support to iPhones that were up to 5 years
old. This period has been reduced to just 4 years with the new iOS 13.
For the owners of iPads, the
story is not much different. The new operating system for iPads, called iPadOS,
is actually based on iOS 13 and so it will extend support only to iPads
starting from iPad Air 2 and higher. As far as Mini iPad series is concerned,
it will only be iPad Mini 4 and newer models that will find support for the
latest operating system. Thankfully, iPad 2017 and iPad 2018 will be able to
run on the new operating system.
What surprises many is the
fact that iOS 13 will support iPad Mini 4 even though it has A8 processor
fitted inside. Owners of iPhone 6 are complaining as their smartphones will not
be able to enjoy the user experience of the new update even though these phones
are also fitted with the same A8 processor. Luckily, owners of small 4 inch
devices like iPhone SE and iPod Touch will be able to run on the latest iOS 13.
Among other things, users of iOS 13 will find their
apps opening twice as fast as they did in iOS 12. Downloads of apps will also
take 50% less time. Users will also enjoy the new Dark mode as well as exciting
photo editing tools.
