AT&T, the giant telecommunications company of the country, has announced that it will allow consumers to pay their bills through Bitcoin. It becomes the first major mobile and Telecommunications Company to allow payments in a Cryptocurrency. Customers have received AT&T mail, telling them to pay their bills in Bitcoin if they so desire. However, the company will not receive payments directly in Bitocin as a third party service will convert this currency into USD for AT&T.

Customers of AT&T will not be able to make their payments in Cryptocurrency if they choose the option of online payment or if they make use of myAT&T app for making payments. Bitpay, the payment processor used by AT&T will recognize the payments made in Bitcoin and it will accept them on behalf of the company.
Announcing the new payment facility, Vice President of Finance Business Operations of AT&T said that the company realizes that it has customers who own Cryptocurrency and sue them for various transactions. Kevin McDorman added that the company is pleased to allow such customers to pay their bills in a currency that they prefer to use.
BitPay spokesperson said that it is happy to add the name of AT&T to its growing list of businesses that are already accepting payments in Cryptocurrency. This payment processing company accepts the payments made in Cryptocurrency and deposits the amount in USD in the account of the client on the next business day after deducting 1% of the transaction value as its fee. The spokesperson added that the client is protected against any volatility in the price of the Cryptocurrency so that it does not suffer from any financial losses.
Chief commercial officer of BitPay, Sonny Singh, has expressed happiness at this decision of AT&T. Singh said that his company had approached AT&T last year to join its platform and he is happy that AT&T has accepted the request and joined the partnership. He added that this move of AT&T will encourage players of same size to come forward and join hands with BitPay to make lives of customers using crypto currencies easier.
With this step, AT&T has legitimized Cryptocurrency and signaled its mainstreaming which is a big relief for a growing number of consumers who are using it as a preferred method of payment. Although a vast majority of customers have welcomed this move announced through AT&T mail support, there are some experts who feel that this move by the company is a result of the realization that more and more youngsters (read Millennials) prefer crypto currencies over conventional currency for their transactions.
Joe McCann, a hedge fund manager feels that AT&T may have been forced to take this decision because of its internal data that shows a large number of its customers are requesting for payments to be accepted in crypto currencies. This sentiment was echoed by Kevin McDorman who said that AT&T was looking for ways to expand and also improve its service for its customers.
AT&T mail support told its customers that it was not necessary for them to make an account with BitPay as they can make their payments just by having a Bitcoin wallet.
