Check for email from Yahoo Customer Services regarding

Millions of men and women have been using Yahoo mail for more than a decade to make their lives easier. It is a wonderful webmail service that is known for its lightning fast speed and versatile features. However, there was bad news for Yahoo users around the country in September 2016 when Internet was splashed with stories of millions of Yahoo accounts having been hacked. Yahoo itself confirmed that more than 500 million accounts had been breached. The number increased to 1 billion accounts in December. In 2017, Yahoo support accepted that all 3 billion of its accounts have been compromised.

Check for any email from Yahoo regarding breach of data
If you are using Yahoo mail and feel that your email account has been breached, there is no need to feel scared. It may or may not be true. The first thing you need to do is to confirm if data breach has in fact taken place or not. It is natural for you to even try and log in to your own account at this point of time. If you are worried about the safety of your credit card number that you have stored in your Yahoo mail account, you can approach Yahoo tech support for help and advice.

Set a new password
You can log into your Yahoo email account to see if Yahoo has sent any email to you confirming data breach or not. If there is no such email from Yahoo, you can breathe a sigh of relief. The next step you should do is to change your password as quickly as possible. Make sure you do not make a password that you are already using for any other website such as Google. It becomes easier for attackers to hack accounts of customers who use the same password for many different websites.

Set another security layer around your account
After changing your password, you can also take one more step to safeguard your sensitive information contained in your Yahoo account. Go into account settings and change questions and answers attached to your Yahoo account. This will help in adding a layer of security around your personal information contained in your email account.

The latest method suggested by online Yahoo support to enhance security of user’s accounts is to go for a ‘2 step verification’. This means that you cannot automatically log in to your Yahoo account by simply entering your password. After this first step, Yahoo sends you a verification code containing temporary password on the mobile phone number that you have registered with the company. You enter this password in your Yahoo account to gain entry into your Yahoo mail account. This means that even if the hacker has access to your email password, only you can gain entry into the account as the temporary password is sent by Yahoo to your mobile phone.

It is only by being alert and by not falling prey to the trap set by attackers that you can stay safe with your Yahoo account these days.
